Chaque mois de février on rend hommage à James Yancey aka Jay Dee aka J-Dilla.

Depuis 2006, J-Dilla doit faire kiffer les anges avec DJ Mehdi, et sur terre, quelle perte. Une légende n’est plus, et c’est bien 15 ans après qu’on entends les gimmicks typique du producteur chez par exemple Apollo Brown. Le natif de Detroit a démarré au côté du collectif The Ummah au milieu des 90’s. Après des productions pour Busta Rhymes ; De La Soul ; The Pharcyde… c’est le Got ’til it’s gone de Janet Jackson et son instru minimaliste qui va le propulser vers la Pop Culture … pour mieux revenir vers l’Underground avec son groupe Slum Village et des productions de sa ville comme J-88 ; Que-D ou Copywrite.

En 2001, le label BBE lui donne carte blanche et Welcome 2 Detroit commence à prendre de l’ampleur. Donuts sera son dernier album.
